3 ways to become a better public speaker

How you go from feeling nervous to confident when public speaking is one that requires mindset + technical approach. Even if you feel pretty good about giving presentations now, there are always areas you can improve.

In fact, the most eloquent speakers are always working on three things:

1. Tone: Your tone is how you draw your audience in. Whether you're speaking to 1, 10, or 100 people - tone is everything. It signals your excitement or seriousness, and it can also set the tone of the room. You can work on improving your tone of voice by:

  • modulating it to convey emotions, enthusiasm, and confidence.

Don't worry about sounding silly. It's better to have variety than to be monotoned.

2. Body Language: Your body language speaks volumes and it plays a significant role in how your message is percieved. For example:

  • your posture, eye contact, and gestures all contribute to the overall impression you make.

A confident and open body language can help you connect with your listeners and make your speaking more powerful and memorable.

3. Engagement: It's better to prioritize engagement than overloading your listeners with too much information and data. The key to an engaging message is to capture your audiences attention and hold it. Crafting a powerful message is asking yourself these two questions:

  • who is my audience // what do they care about?

The more they care, the more engaged they will be.

Preparation is key. These three skills - tone of voice, body language, and audience engagement are all vital components of a successful public speech. By practicing and honing these skills, you'll be able to deliver a clear, articulate, and captivating presentation that leaves a lasting impression.

Have you ever looked around to see colleagues, who seem to put in half the effort, get all the recognition and attention just because they talk a lot? Maybe something like this happened at work this week and you thought to yourself: These people have no idea what they’re talking about, but they go on and on as if they do! Hi! There is nothing more exciting and nerve-wracking than launching a new book, yet, here we are. My debut communication book, "Smart, Not Loud: How to Get Noticed at Work for All the Right Reasons" comes out tomorrow. The reason I wrote this book is because I want to provide a tactical roadmap for those who do not consider themselves the dominate, assertive, or loud-spoken type so they can unlock bigger and more coveted opportunities at work. As a person raised in a "Quiet Culture" myself,...

Learning how to celebrate your accomplishments at work is one of the key topics I cover inside my upcoming book: "Smart, Not Loud: How to Get Noticed at Work for all the Right Reasons." As the author, it's important I mirror this, which is why I want to celebrate this exciting time with you too! The book releases worldwide on July 9 (which you can pre-order here), and I have several events planned that I'd love to invite you to (some public and some private): You're invited to attend five...
