How to accept compliments without downplaying it

Hi everyone!

We're officially in the holiday season and one of my favorite topics to share, especially during this time, is how to graciously accept a compliment without downplaying yourself.

Whether it's at a work party or at a family gathering, figuring out how to respond is actually a skill you can naturally incorporate so it doesn't come across as awkward or clunky.

For example, if someone says, “Great job!” and your response is, “Oh, it was nothing," there's actually a smarter way to reply. First, just say thank you—and add why it means a lot to you. It’s simple, direct, and shows confidence. For example, if someone says they loved your presentation, you can say, “Thanks, I really appreciate that—it means a lot to hear because I put a lot of effort into it.”

Next, never downplay it—own it! Think of a compliment like a gift: if someone goes out of their way to give you something, you wouldn't just brush it off? Accept the compliments and give a simple reason why you appreciate it.

Now let’s flip it—what makes for a great compliment? A generic “Nice job!” works, but specificity make it memorable. Here's how: noticed the little things. For example, instead of just saying, "Congrats on that deal," you can add a personal touch of, "I know it must not have been easy, but awesome work."

Adding a point of view shows your self and social awareness, and it makes others feel good that you noticed the little things!

When it comes to compliments, accepting it confidently, reflecting on why it matters, and taking a moment to also share compliments is a great way to build visibility and take credit. In fact, that's what I like to say is "Smart, Not Loud."

Until next week!
