Happy 2026!

Hi!

Happy 2026. The beginning of a new year is a great chance to rethink how you'll want this year to be. One of the things I like to do, and often encourage my own family and friends, is to pick one word that'll be your year's word. Mine? Abundance.

With so much content, news, and "loudness" in the world, I feel like it's easy to lose sight of what's valuable to us. This causes us to adopt a scarcity mentality where everything feels negative, competitive, harsh, and cold. To me, abundance is about intention, values, and just as importantly, knowing when is enough. It's similar to what I say in my book, "Smart, Not Loud" - you don't have to speak often, but you do have to speak when it matters.

So, what's your word? Here's a short list to help:

Growth

Balance

Courage

Clarity

Presence

Focus

Renewal

Joy

Simplicity

Confidence

Healing

Intention

Curiosity

Consistency

Resilience

Abundance

Alignment

Patience

Trust

Expansion

Gratitude

Purpose

Intention

Patience

One of the things I'm most excited about this year is we're bringing back the opportunity for you to book 1-1 communication coaching sessions with our coaches. If getting better at communicating your work is one of your goals, or maybe it's public speaking, there is no better way for you to do it than with our Board of Communicators. You simply choose which coach you'd like to work with and we'll handle the rest. (We provide invoice for learning reimbursement).

For my executives, this is also your chance to work with me under my newly updated Art of Communicating Program. There are only a few spots open. You can start applying today.

In the meantime, I hope you take these next few days to enjoy the last bit of holiday, but also find a few minutes to see which word resonates with you as your 2026 word of the year.

Until next week!

Jessica Chen

Hi Reader, Many of us have now seen the disastrous White House press briefing in the U.S. this week. And while people may have different opinions about what happened, as someone who spent years working on TV and now in leadership communications, I couldn't help but notice the communication lessons we can all learn. Here's what stood out to me. Speaking on the spot is tough and if you aren't prepared, you're setting yourself up for failure. That's basically what happened. She wasn't prepared....

Hi Reader, If you're beginning to think about performance conversations, this is the newsletter for you. Recently, I've been hearing this from the people in my workshops, "I'm doing great work. Why am I not getting the next role?" Often, one of the answers is related to executive presence. In fact, it might not even be something your manager tells you, but how you carry yourself creates the impression people have of you. So what is executive presence? According to the Center for Talent...

Reader, One of my most popular trainings I host with corporate companies is called "high-potential leaders" training. People who participate are usually very ambitious and have high-leadership potential. This training, which I often lead, helps them get promoted to the next level. The first question I usually ask is to have them think of their best boss and then name the top three reasons why. For you, who was your favorite boss and why? Over the years, I've discovered a similar pattern in...
