Not sure what to say? Still speak up

Read time: 2 minutes. Many of us were taught we should only speak up if we know the answer. It makes sense. Why raise our hand in a team meeting if we're not sure? But here's some food for thought, if you only speak up when you're confident, you are leaving a lot of opportunity to build visibility on the table.

If you look around, the most successful people don't always wait to know something before they chime in. Instead, they ask strategic questions. As you think about your work and how you're perceived by the team, how can you begin to elevate your speaking confidence even if you don't have all the answers?

Here are 3 ways to speak up (when you're not the expert):

  1. Read the room before you speak - identify the right moment to chime in, including that split second pause.
  2. Admit what you don't know - if you don't understand something, chances are others don't too.
  3. Remember your value - self confidence is critical here. You have a perspective others don't have, show it!

Keep these in mind and see you next week!

Hi there, Recently, I was facilitating a workshop with a group of managers to build their executive presence at work. I came in to teach stakeholder communication, client engagement, and cross-functional coordination. About 30 minutes in, one woman asked, “How do I build executive presence on a platform like LinkedIn?” Instantly, I smiled. I love teaching this topic—building visibility at work, particularly on LinkedIn—because the strategies to transform your professional profile are actually...

Hi! Happy 2026. The beginning of a new year is a great chance to rethink how you'll want this year to be. One of the things I like to do, and often encourage my own family and friends, is to pick one word that'll be your year's word. Mine? Abundance. With so much content, news, and "loudness" in the world, I feel like it's easy to lose sight of what's valuable to us. This causes us to adopt a scarcity mentality where everything feels negative, competitive, harsh, and cold. To me, abundance is...

Hi everyone! We're officially in the holiday season and one of my favorite topics to share, especially during this time, is how to graciously accept a compliment without downplaying yourself. Whether it's at a work party or at a family gathering, figuring out how to respond is actually a skill you can naturally incorporate so it doesn't come across as awkward or clunky. For example, if someone says, “Great job!” and your response is, “Oh, it was nothing," there's actually a smarter way to...
